---I can't quote what you said, goshdannit, at least I can't see it---
I think it's obvious that you have had this character for a long time. I bet you have some relatively strange bond with your character, emotional or whatever. That always happens if you have a character for a long time or if he developed and grew through roleplay. That's what I've experienced pretty often. First you created a character out of pure spontaneity and through months or just weeks of interesting and suspense-packed Roleplay, the character gains way more depth, even if you didn't intend him to be at first. You look through his eyes, he has grown on you and it's not even difficult any more to roleplay with him. Subsequently you feel and think the way he/she does, even when he isn't even close to having a similiar personality like yours.
I personally love it when you just crafted a character out of boredom, gave him some strange traits and through the Roleplay, everything melts together and your character gets molded, unintentionally! Flaws and qualities start working together and everything makes sense.
I know what you mean with backstory being the most important.
Nothing is worse than a character who resembles a Mary-Jane wholeheartedly who acts unreasoned and illogically and if you ask why he/she does this and that, often enough, the answer is "just because I can". It's not the "I" that matters, it's HIM/HER that matters and not the iother way around. You can't just say my character acts that way because I can say so, there have to be reasons and nothing is worse than a character that's constantly out of character, actually.
( I always have to laugh when people say: My character is always apathetic and indifferent, totally cold and so, but if someone threats his friends, he turns crazy, or if someone mocks him, he gets angry, or if someone dies, he cries.)
Nothing is better than flaws, by the way. Flaws, vice, just everything to make the character's personality seem realistic. It's boring when there are always only nice guys and lovely gals around. No one's perfect. Accept it.
I see what you mean with the colors being a hidrance and included into the Roleplay. That is, indeed, interesting and makes it different. But like said, it's another thing to make your character look totally abnormal, just to be able to say he's salient and cunning with his look. It's way more fascinating to have a special personality...often enough that part gets neglected anyway. Always. Everywhere. On every Roleplay forum I have ever been on
