The sun was bright and warmed my black coat. My emerald eyes searching for our little brother Blaze. He had wandered off after he released me from a 'play pin', and I wanted to get him back. "CHARGE!" He howled, tackling me to the floor. I was quick on my feet and charged back, knocking him into the cold river. He did not resurface. "Blaze?" I call, wading into the muddy bank. His golden brown fur would have been easier to spot if he had fallen in the middle, where the water was clear. Just that moment I felt jaws clamp around my front paw. I screeched as I pulled my paw up, dragging a laughing Blaze along with it. "For the youngest of us, you sure are smart." I shook my paw until he released and rolled playfully in the clear part of the water, washing away all the mud. He waded out of the water and though his fur was plastered to his sides, his mussels were evident all the more. "And strong." I added playfully, before tackling and pinning him to the ground. "Where's Shadow?" He asked suddenly serious. I look over my shoulder, Shadow was nowhere to be seen. "I'm not sure..." A howl rose up from the woods.
"Shadow? Shadow!" I howl back. "Huaka!" It called. "We have to find her. Mom!" Sunset was by my side in an instant. "What's the matter?" She asked, cool and calm. "It's Shadow!" I tried to express how urgent the situation might be. "She might be in trouble! We have to look for her!" "Now now..." She soothed. "Shadow is just went for a little walk that's all." The bushes rustled nearby. Shadow burst out of the underbrush, a giant right behind her. Human...
"Gun!" Some yells. Thunder claps were heard all over the camp. Wolves were falling one by one, marking the brown dirt with red splashes. The human fled while the rest of us gathered around the wounded. Many were actually dead. "Mom? Blaze?" I look at the dead bodies, stopping dead at one with silver fur. "Mom?" I whimper. Another blast came from the forest. "Blaze!" I ran into the woods. Stopping at Blaze's body in a heap. A wound in his right leg was pooling over in blood. "Get her." He breathed. "Go after her and bring her back." Wolves gathered around us, but I did not notice. I was not going to disobey Blaze. Not if this was his final wish.
I ran through the forest, following the sound of a shinny monster the whole way. The trees began to thin, and I knew I was way out of my pack's territory. The monster stopped and I peered out of the bushes, there were very few trees. A large arch of stone was the entrance of a large metal cage built to hold many animals. The Zoo...
I waited day after day for Shadow to come out. One night, maybe a year later, there was a terrible sound from the back of the Zoo. Shadow exited the dreaded place, and even though it was dark, I swore I saw dark blood drip from her muzzle. I followed her back into the woods and valleys as she wandered around. A wolf approach her, and I stiffened. She's never been confronted from another wolf before... He seemed to be saying something but I was too faraway to hear. I wandered a little closer only to hear her soft words.
"I'm sorry." She attacked the wolf with one bit to the neck. Blood was all over her paws and muzzle, and it wasn't just that of the wolf. Human blood scent was all over her.
She had changed. Shadow was different now. A shiver went up my spine. I tried to follow her the next few days, but I lost her scent and was forced to track her as if she were prey. I will find you Shadow... I will find you.
