A sum-up of what I think would fit.

Just some random stuff I jotted down.
Choosing your species/subspecies
Just what it says on the tin! Basically, you choose the 'base' of your wolf, which sets the limits on size and such to fit what your wolf is. It could also end up being a label of some sort that could show up on a general data page if you click on the wolf a certain way in-game.
Body customization
Think like Feral-Heart, where you can change the body type and ect. by playing with sliders or selecting certain options. Of course, there would be species specific sliders to keep smaller breeds from being larger than a Canadian Timber Wolf! {Which, mind you, is considered the biggest gray wolf in all of North America!}
Pelt tinting
This one pulls from Wolfquest. To keep things realistic and repel the all black with neon green stripes 'wolves' from FH, there could be a predetermined realistic spectrum of colors to choose from, and a realistic tinting thing as well.
Markings!
No customization could go without this! As to keep the realism, there could be premade markings {which have already been taken care of} that mimic those of a real wolf, with their own tinting and coloration based on the main color of the fur.
Trait skills
Basically, this may draw inspiration from the Power:Stamina:Speed sliders from Wolfquest. Due to this game's more exploration nature along with RP, some players may want their wolves to have better suited traits for their playstyles. A rabbit chaser may favor speed, cunning, and stamina over brute force; a wolf who preys on elk may trade in agility and tracking for stamina, speed, and brute force. Of course, you'd start with perhaps 25 points or so spread out evenly across a few categories. A layer could alter it to their liking so that their wolf is more adapted for the chosen lifestyle. Of course, players would need a sense of moderation, because a wolf with 1 speed and higher everything else would be too slow to catch up to prey! An idea for how stats will spread can be like this:
Speed
Strength/Brute Force
Cunning/Stealth
Agility {how fast your wolf can turn midjump/midrun}
Stamina
Tracking
Gender/Sex
No, I am not promoting any inappropriate stuff being added. Basically, it just gives your wolf an identity if you want to get a mate and have pups. Heck, there shouldn't even be a visual thing for mating, the two players should just be able to send a mate request, if the receiver agrees, then there, pups on the way. The pups could just poof next to the mother when the time comes.
Customized Howl
See above bold letters. But no, seriously. Like, give 3-6 or more different howls, and then the pitch can be changed to fit your wolf. You'd be able to demo what it would sound like in all life stages, so that that cute puppy howl doesn't turn out bad when your wolf grows up.
aaand now I've got nothing. kaheheh. Feel free to tell me how impossible some of these things will be.
