Roisin
(Pronounced ro-sheen)
Gender: Female
Age: 8 months (14 in wolf years)
Breed: Alaskan tundra wolf
Appearance: Her pelt is dense and fluffy, snow white with a smudgy grey stripe from her nose to her tail, and a grey smudge on each cheek. Her build is slender and streamlined and she has long, thin legs that give her an awkward, wobbling, fawn-like gait and a tall stature. Frost grey eyes add to her wintry appearance.
Voice: Roisin is reluctant to speak, but when she does her voice is quiet and tentative, though once she gets into her stride it is difficult for her to stop.
Personality: Roisin doesn’t like company much. She is socially awkward, and is terrified that her lack of social skills will land her in trouble, so she rarely speaks around strangers; this paranoia affects all her relationships with other wolves and keeps her in a state of nervousness almost all the time. She panics easily, but although she is skittish she is surprisingly good at defending herself. Roisin doesn’t like to fight much, but will protect herself if she is threatened. She has no patience with younger pups as she feels they are immature, and usually loses her temper when she is around wolves younger than herself. She is not very submissive, and will object if she feels that her situation, or anyone else’s, is unfair.
History: Roisin’s mother and father, Cyane and Shade, were the alphas of a pack in the far north. They had an easy existence; prey was abundant, as was territory, and there was only one rival pack. Disputes between the two packs were extremely rare, and although they disliked each other they shared resources evenly. The winter during which Roisin was born was uncommonly cold, even for the north. Gradually prey diminished, until there was barely enough to go around between the wolves of one pack, let alone two. Disputes between the packs became more and more frequent, until a wolf of Cyane and Shade’s pack was killed in an attack by the rival pack as he returned from hunting. Rumors abounded that the rivals were planning a raid on their territory to snap up every last morsel of food they possessed. One night, Shade went to patrol the territory borders to ensure that the rivals weren’t lurking nearby. Only minutes after he had left, Cyane heard his sharp yelp, cut off suddenly. Terrified that the unthinkable had occurred, she told Roisin and her brother Nori to run and hide in the snow, and not to come out. Cyane crept away before the rival pack arrived. They tore apart the den, searching for food buried in the snow.
Aneko, the alpha female, heard Nori’s piteous whimpers issuing from the clump of snow where the two pups were hidden. As she approached, Nori heard her and, terrified, sped into the snow before she could intercept him. Roisin, who was still very young, didn’t see Aneko until she was standing right over her. Roisin instantly reminded Aneko of her own pup who had become lost in a snowstorm when he was only a few weeks old, along with her mate. Despite protests and objections from her pack, Aneko took Roisin in and raised her as her own. Roisin was rejected as a proper pack member by the other wolves, and tormented by their pups. They sensed that she was not one of their pack, so they bit her tail and scratched her face. Roisin was too frightened of the pups’ parents to complain to Aneko, but being alpha she found out soon enough. Realising that Roisin had no idea how to take care of herself, Aneko taught her to hunt small birds and mammals, and also how to defend herself. Roisin was finally able to retaliate against the pups’ attacks, and although they never managed to like her, they at least showed her a little more respect. She hated living with Aneko’s pack, and despite Aneko’s kindness, Roisin left as soon as she was sure she wouldn’t die of starvation in the snow.
