Prologue
It was a cold night, the wind blew gently on the leaves white a thin layer of frost had already settled itself on the forest floor. There was little commotion as the few remaining wolves trudged through the wasteland.
On the nights leading up to the present man had made their lives worse than death, and the few that had buckled down and survived the torturous weeks had no more love in their hearts.
The pup swung back and forth in her mother's jaws, she was not yet old enough to make the journey out on her own paws. Terror had struck the young wolf like the scent of blood to a shark. Quickly.
Feebly the tiny ball of fur opened her eyes for no more than a moment.
Burnt trees lie on their sides, no longer hot at least a few days old, the ground was white with ash and leaves.
Was the whole world like this now, they had been traveling for many days, covering many miles and it was all the same. The pains of hunger ebbed at her sides, they hadn't seen life for days. Not even a plant.
It was nearing winter now, this would not be a good start, as winter grew closer, prey would no doubt become more scarce.
Suddenly everyone froze, she could tell from the way that her mother was breathing that she was tense, her fur was bristling as well. What had happened, we're they to stop for the night?
Standing on the edge of a hill, the pack watched in awe seeing the damage the fire had truly done. But further away, probably a days walk was a river, and on the other side was life. Plants, trees just out of reach for the night. Even mountains stood outlined against the night sky, peaks almost touching the moon's edge.
Their eyes glowed and mouths watered for the thought of prey that would be caught on the other side of that river.
Noel turned to look at their alphas, Jagged and Elaine, she could have almost seen excitement in the young beta's face as she parted her jaws to speak to them.
"Is this the place we have been searching for?" The young white beta asked, after days of walking you would think it was clear that she would almost be asleep, but now she looked almost as lively as ever.
"Yes."
Chapter #1
As the morning sun rose, along with a few pairs of sleepy eyes, although they had slept together it had been a cold, cruel night the smell of ash was almost so strong that it threatened to choke her with every breath.
A sudden wail woke the rest, heads and ears perked up in an instant as well as many had gotten to their paws, a female wolf with long fur sat distraught in front of a small pup whom was coated in the cruel white ash.
At the sound of the wails, Aaron a large white wolf had been beside the mother in an instant nosing the pup, while also being cautious of her mother.
"I am so sorry Tranquillity." He murmured as he brushed past her, but his comfort would not calm her.
The mother buried her head in the pup's fur desperately searching for signs of life while many watched, she could not.
Mika, her cousin had been suffocated, the much younger pup could barely move let alone pull herself out of the ash to breathe. She would have fallen asleep to rest her head in the same substance that would kill her.
While the others quietly got up and mourned the loss, Noel got up and approached the alphas whom watched calmly.
"We must continue, if we are to make it out of this land of death then we must go now to reach it by nightfall. We cannot survive another day without something to fill our bellies and give us strength."
For a moment Jagged pondered these thoughts before nodding quickly.
The others took that as a sign to get up and prepare for the day of walking that had been given to them. Just one more day.
Her mother, Badger rose slowly, every rib on her body was showing, and for the last few nights her milk had dried up. So alike everyone else she had begun to starve.
Blinking wearily, she got to her paws, stumbling back and forth as it was a struggle to keep her balance.
Grabbed by the scruff, she was whisked from the ground and brought in closer to the crowd. Nobody spoke.
An eerie silence filled the group, Tranquillity had risen, holding her dead pup in her jaws, challenging anyone to try and take Mika's body from her.
And to her surprise nobody had even considered it.
Only the excitement from Noel would be seen as a positive emotion, she looked as if she was going to explode if they didn't start moving this very moment.
Jabs of hunger pains stabbed her in her stomach, she wanted to lie down and rest, to sleep her pain away.
The wolves continued on, with every step bringing them closer to the river, a water source, as well as a definite food source.
As they continued on the wind began to pick up, blowing them back and forth.
The ash began to pick up as well, stinging their eyes and tongues, coating them in it the foul tange of burnt wood now rested on her tongue, her red fur now silver.
The blistering winds now threatened to take them into dangerous roads, while sharp rocks stuck out of the ground like sore bumps.
Their only way of navigation to a safe place was the sun.
Would they make it?
Chapter #2
The waves of ash seemed to only increase in size as they neared the river, as soon as they had gotten close it had almost completely vanished. Fox was dropped lightly onto the ground, while Badger stayed with the pups the others had all clumped together, something was wrong.
"The river is moving to fast to cross, we would be carried downstream before reaching the other side." The familiar voice of Eos exclaimed.
"We can't give up, we need to at least try to cross!" Noel countered.
"What about the pups they would never be able to swim that!" Aejacks argued.
"Enough!" Shattered continued, "The strongest of us will carry the pups over the river, then will help the others to cross."
Elaine seemed to be content with that, nobody dare say another word on the subject.
As they all disbanded Fox had come to look at the river, her eyes widened and ears shot to the back of her head. Taken by surprise she was yet again whisked from her paws, but it was not Badger but Aejacks who then leaped into the water. A surge of ice cold water coated her, the water dragged them downstream gasping for air the two broke the surface. In shock the only thing she was worried about was getting to the other side.
Taken under the water by another massive wave the wolves were shoved further downstream till they collided with a fallen tree. Pain surged through Fox, but she had barely felt it. Aejacks held tight to the wood desperately trying to not be sucked under by the sheer force of the water.
A numbing sensation started in Fox's paws and grew to her legs, it would eventually spread to her tail and then to her torso.
Aejacks was grabbed by the scruff and pulled closer to the shore and then out of the water entirely. It was Jagged, the male alpha who had saved them. Gasping for air the two hacked up water both lying on their sides. The only few who had come to greet them were Noel and Elaine.
Quail, one of the younger male wolves approached the alphas with a look of scorn.
"We shouldn't have tried to cross!" He growled.
Another wolf, Stone his brother came to join him. "We lost too many, what can you say for Badger, Eos, Diskus or Claire. They didn't make it and it doesn't look like Aaron will either." Stone growled.
*Badger was gone?* Fox thought to herself, she couldn't even comprehend the thought at the moment, she was still in shock.
"Silence!" Jagged barked, "They died for the good of the pack, would you like to join them?" He spat.
The two wolves backed down, it was clear that they did not agree with Jagged's words.
Elaine spoke something quietly to him before relaxing and laying her head down on her paws. Everyone was in shock, nobody seemed to notice that they had reached the forest, even if the price was so high.
The sudden crack of a branch sent many pairs of eyes to the bushes, they were exhausted but everyone of them would have tried to fight to protect the pack.
