This is the story of the life of a wolf named Dew

I was born in a small, rather damp den in the outskirts of a small forest, and the memories of the first few weeks of life are slowly fading away for those memories are from so long ago. I had a few siblings, that much is true, but I really wish that I could've spent more time with them. From what I could recollect, there were three of them, a big brown male one, mother called him Bark--like the bark of a tree-- he was the oldest of us all. Then there was a white one with a fawn tint, mother had dubbed her Orchid, she was the youngest and from all that I could remember, rather fragile. Then before me was a male pup who was black with dark grey markings, he was named Shade. My coat is silver with lighter patches on my ear tips, muzzle, and tail and a dark grey stripe running down from my head to my tail tip, my name became Dew. I never got to know mother's name for my hearing is not very well, only slightly dulled, and whenever it was mentioned, it sounded like a mumble, no coherent sounds. Father was never there long enough, he would come and go, and when our eyes were open, and we were more aware of our surroundings, I noticed he'd come with meat in his mouth. He was dark in color, a mix of dark grey, black and light grey, whereas mother was brown and fawn colored. One thing I remember better than anything else at the time was the sweet, milky smell of mother's coat, and I cherished the smell dearly. The memories I do remember better though, where later in life, when we finally left the den.

The day we left the den was chilly, the cold piercing my skin beneath my fur, it was actually early fall, for I heard from mother's mumbling that we were born too late in the year. Bark was ready and able to leave the den and almost lept right out a few times, when mother would grab him by the scruff and pull him back. I was a bit more cautious about this new adventure of leaving the den to go see the outside world, Shade acted like he could care less about leaving the den, but Orchid, she was scared to go outside. Surprisingly, when mother finally gave us permission to exit, I was the first to carefully step out of the den, feeling all the strange new textures under my paws and the softness of the cool grass. The whole new experience of being outside enhanced my sense of smell and in no time, I could smell many, many things. And it was one of the best experiences I've ever had.

Bark--who was so excited about leaving the den--burst right out of the den entrance and rolled in the grass, giggling. He seemed to be the happiest pup in the world. Orchid had to be pushed out of the den by mother, and the moment she was outside, she shivered and dashed back inside the den in fear. Shade took a little convincing to come out--I think his problem was that he preferred the den and it's warmth--and when he did, he just plopped his flank on the ground and moped there in one spot. I liked the chill of the air, even though it gave me bumps on my skin, but it was refreshing and calm, and it made me very content and peaceful. Bark ran around in circles pouncing on every little thing he saw that moved and started to yip and yelp in joy. "Dew! Look at tis little thang!". When I finally reluctantly got up from my relaxing spot to see what Bark was yipping about a huge frog leaped into the air and hopped into the nearest burrow. Bark ran to the burrow and started to try and stuff his paw into the burrow, and when he finally did, he yelped and whipped his paw out of the hole and I looked up to see the frog, latching onto his paw. Shade stayed in his same spot though, and he never spoke except for this remark, "He deserved it." Orchid came back out of the den, a little more calmer than before and sat next to me. "You'll protect me, right big sis?", amazingly, just like me, she spoke better than Bark. Shade was only a little better at talking than Bark, but otherwise, he was around his level. That day was a pretty good day though, but overtime I started to notice that Bark had trouble learning things, although Shade was starting to open up and be a little happier. A month passed and we were going on short trips with mother and father, learning what things were and what they were called, what was good for us to eat and what was bad for us, and most of all, how to hunt the little animals that were small enough for pups. The days grew even chillier than the first day of leaving the den, and mother started to look worried, while father kept reassuring her of something, but I don't know what--due to my dull hearing--but mother still looked worried anyway.
