Red Lightning
Red's defining traits would be her temper and overall reclusive nature, as well as her paranoia and, when she does form a bond, her willingness to do whatever in her ability to protect those she loves.
She was born the runt of her litter and several times her dam was determined to end the life of the undersized rat that had wormed its way into her perfect life. She denied the newborn milk or cleaning during the first weeks, and often Red's care came from the lowly Omega who was designated to watch them when the dam was busy.
Upon gaining mobility, Red's life became worse. The firstborn of the litter, a female named Fading Light, was taught to torment her smaller sibling. More often than not Red Lightning was clawed and bitten and treated as a living chew toy every day.
Several months later, once she had reached maturity, Red Lightning met a male named Reign. Reign was a young brute who had been living alone for weeks since the death of his natal pack. He was quick to startle, constantly fretful of his well-being, and on the brink of starvation where he had not been able to catch even the meekest of mice.
Interested in this male, Red began to help him, bringing him portions of her own share of kill every day until he had regained his heath. Reign began to recover mentally and started opening up to the young crimson female. A friendship began to form, and with it being the only true bond Red Lightning knew, she favored this and treated her friendship with Reign like pure gold.
Gradually, as more and more responsibility was called upon Red, she began to slacken on her pack duties. Trying to be with Reign as often as possible was taking a toll on her when it became time to hunt and travel. She spent more and more time away from the pack, hardly even knowing the wolves within it. When Red Lightning did abide by her responsibilities, she was often irritable, impatient, and clumsy.
Fade and the alpha female noticed this behavior, and much to Red's dismay, talk of a new Omega began to stir.
Knowing this would surely confirm her fate as a lowly mutt, not wanting to accept that she was flawed in such a way that she could always be looked down upon, Red Lightning left her natal pack without a second thought, convincing Reign to travel with her, as well.
Life was good. Red had matured into a grown female, and her bond with Reign grew tighter and tighter. No longer having to worry about who would try to attack her next, or if she would be able to sneak away and meet Reign again, Red Lightning had truly made a new life for herself. She became more and more confident in her abilities and gradually discovered a skill within herself; she was fast. Faster than most. Delighted to have a sense of ability, Red Lightning felt like things were beginning to become great, and she began to consider creating a family with Reign.
But it wasn't to be, for after a mere year after her new life, they were singled out by a cougar, and Reign sacrificed himself for Red.
After the death of her best friend and possible love, Red Lightning became more temperamental, angrier with herself as well as life, and even considered returning to her pack and accepting the Omega rank.
But she didn't. For several more years Red roamed the tundra as a lone wolf, gradually becoming more and more paranoid and bitter as she started to decline into old age.
Fading Light had left her pack as well, instead taking a love interest with the Alaskan Malamute mix known as Aaron, believing they could produce a functioning pack despite his differing specie. Fading Light was chased away from the human establishment where Aaron had lived, but not before she had become pregnant. Red discovered the situation and when Fade had her pups, despite all that had happened, she was prepared to defend her sibling against humans and all other threats.
Fade, still hateful of her sister due to her size as well as her running away from family and responsibility, was unwelcoming of Red Lightning's help.
Red Lightning's loyalty never wavered. Still grieving for the loss of her chance at a pack and family, Red kept close to their Densite as months passed and each pup grew.
Despite never meeting her until much later, Red drew an almost immediate attachment to the tiny, oddly proportioned pup named Shock Blue. Watching them from a distance day-to-day, it became obvious that the firstborn of the litter, a slender she-wolf named Velveteen, had some of Fading Light's dominant disposition. Watching a repeat of her own childhood fall victim to her undersized niece, Red felt an instant flame of loyalty toward the pup.
Several months passed. The humans had been alerted by Fade's presence so close to their homes and livestock. They tracked her constantly, and trying to rear pups whilst not being killed was a difficult task. A hard snow fell across the tundra one evening. A gunshot followed by the victorious howl of a hunting dog made Fading Light's death official. Six barely-weaned pups, hungry and terrified, wandered from their burrow.
Red Lightning took action immediately.
But not before three pups were claimed by the freezing cold. Numbly forcing herself not to grieve for the lives she never really knew, Red returned the three remaining children to the den and warmed them. Velveteen, Shock Blue, and a dark-furred male of the name Bata.
Unfortunately for Red, none of the three got along.
More months passed and each pup began to grow into maturity. All the while raising them and being a leadership figure, Red battled herself internally with grief of losing the chance to have pups with Reign, losing her sister and birth pack, and not having the strength to be a true alpha. It wasn't hard to lose the attention of the humans, as they believed they had removed the problem with the death of Fade. But still, fear of somebody dying and losing everything she had again, Red Lightning forced her makeshift pack to flee South of the tundra.
Sadness turned to blame, blame turned to anger, anger turned to hatred. Nearly every day the yearlings fought, drawing blood on occasion. For months it was an endless cycle of fights, accusing, and sorrow.
Two years had passed since Red found Fading Light pregnant and without a pack. Bata, Velveteen, and Shock Blue had reached adulthood.
Red Lightning herself had declined into an elderly state. Constantly traveling each day had taken a larger toll on the blood red wolf than she'd realized. Suddenly it seemed her limbs were thin as sticks and her crimson fur had dulled. Worried if she would be able to handle the constant arguing of the three youngsters, Red Lightning felt she had no choice but to split the pack.
Velveteen sadly departed and Bata left without the blink of an eye. The undersized female Shock stayed with Red Lightning, fearful for the fate of her aunt at her age without a pack.
Before long Red had regained her strength as well as her confidence. The two small females lived in peace and for a while, they shared a territory, even. However, not only had Red's physical health declined with age, but her mind had, as well. Already hurt by her past and what she had lost and felt she could not obtain, Red's mind begun to slip altogether. She became quicker to snap, more and more things she started to forget. Paranoia began to take over and she made more irrational decisions. On a bad day, having sorrowful, depressed, furious thoughts, Red Lightning sent Shock Blue away and demanded she never return.
She was able to keep herself up, the pains of her past now a dull, numb ache in the back of her mind. A month or so passed, and old habits returned.
Red found some wolves roaming around the outer area of her territory and jumped on the chance of a new pack. A stubborn goal glued in her mind and thoughts. Forget her size, forget her past, forget everything. She, could, be, an, alpha. A good one, too. She'd make a legendary pack, perfectly functioning, never abusing those of lower rank. She bribed and convinced the wolves she found to tag along and join her. For some odd reason, they did join this crazy old runt.
The first round of her perfect pack didn't go well. The youths argued among one another as well as with Red Lightning herself. Surprised, Red fought fiercely to get the youngsters under control. Of course, a wonderful haven for wolves such as Red's pack would require a name. At a loss, she used the only source of inspiration she could find. A packmate hardly visible in the mist, then vanishing.
The Ghosts in Plain Sight was born.
Several wolves came and left, but they're still up and around.
It is yet to be seen the final fate of Red Lightning and her outlandish pack.
