History of Ruby the Red:
(Pack of the Blooded Sea)
Listen well, traveler, for now you shall hear
Of the heinous crimes that brought endless fear.
Stories were told of a malevolent pack,
Terrible blighters who relentlessly attacked.
Their hunger for power drove them to sin,
Howls echoed as they slaughtered their kin.
Execrable silence fell over the land,
Initiating ominous, dastardly plans.
Ravaging the province, they cut down their foes,
While innocent bystanders drowned in their woes
Abandoned, they begged – scared, they would plea,
Yet their cries went unanswered as their blood filled the sea…
(Pup)
{Two Weeks}Furious winds howled against her closed ears, and a barrage of massive raindrops assaulted her tousled, fuzzy fur. Ruby’s eyes had opened just a few days prior, and her vision still remained blurry and unfocused. Everything went by in a blur, and judging by the way her short limbs bobbed about, she concluded that she was moving at a rapid pace. Ruby heard the muffled voices of the wolves around her. They were shouting frantically, though Ruby was unsure if it was due to a spout of anger, or her pack-mates trying to be heard over the violent winds. However, despite the mayhem occurring around her, Ruby remained relaxed. The familiar, calming scent of her mother helped her keep a level-head, and prevented her from whining in protest. Ruby didn’t know what was happening, but as long as her mother was near, she subconsciously knew that she would be safe.
Unfortunately, all feelings of security were stripped away from the youth when she was abruptly thrown to the ground. She felt the vibrations in the ground; the thunderous echo of paw-steps running across the muddy terrain rang in her head. Ruby blinked, she tried to open her eyes and peer around with her blurry vision, but each time she tried an intense discomfort would plague her sensitive eyes. Thick, chunky mud had found itself smeared across her face after being dropped, but her mind was unable to comprehend what had happened. All Ruby could hear with her unopened ears was the muffled sounds of what appeared to be growling, the wet slap of a body hitting the muddy grounds, and the terrible crash and bang of thunder.
After some time Ruby began wiping a paw over her right eye, and once the mud was pushed aside her eye would pop open. But the instant she was able to see with her blurry vision, a bright flash of light momentarily blinded her, and caused her to snap her eye shut. No longer did she feel the warmth of her mother, nor did the smell the comforting aroma. She assumed she was alone, as all sounds around her – except the cracks of thunder and lightning – gradually silenced. Ruby was terrified, cold, wet, and (she assumed) alone. Thus, she began her quiet whining.
Unknown to the helpless Ruby, she was not alone. In fact, she was surrounded by those who were not part of her pack. Suddenly, before Ruby knew it, she felt herself being lifted by an unknown force. The scent was vaguely familiar to her mother’s, but it had a more… metallic odor? Ruby’s senses were confused- was this her mother? She honestly couldn’t tell, nor would she ever become aware of the total carnage that had been left behind in the wake of the spring hurricane. These wolves were not her true family, but they would become the only family Ruby would ever come to know.

{Five Weeks}Ruby’s vision cleared up several days after the hurricane passed, and her ears followed closely behind. She could now see clearly, and the first sight she saw was who she assumed to be her mother. The she-wolf was bright silver, with a grey diamond on her back and bright yellow eyes. After the rains passed the odd metallic odor faded, and Ruby no longer inquired the identity of her “mother”. All she focused on was the comforting milky aroma she sought out whenever she was struck with hunger.
The second thing Ruby noticed when her vision cleared was her siblings, who she was not aware she had. She wasn’t used to fighting for a meal with others, but she managed. As Ruby examined her litter-mates she noticed most of them were lightly colored; silver, grey, and gold. She, however, was the odd one of the bunch with her dark chocolate fur. She thought nothing of it, though, and continued on with life as usual.
It was during this span of time that Ruby encountered the alpha. He was a massive black wolf with dark brown eyes and a body covered in scars. His name was Saxon, and he was quite young for an alpha, only about two years old- but he was massive, and thickly built. Ruby paid little attention to him.

{Ten Weeks}Ruby, under the surveillance of an adult, would spend much of her spare time wandering with her youngest brother, Peter. Peter had a smooth golden coat, and piercing green eyes. He looked almost identical to their father- however their sire had less white covering his undercarriage.
The two were the best of friends, mainly by default considering their other siblings harassed them; Ruby, for looking so different, and Peter, for being the runt of the litter. Still, they enjoyed each other’s company and were practically inseparable.
More often than not, Ruby would have to fend off her other siblings; Barnabas (grey with a silver diamond on his back and green eyes), and Genevieve (mostly white with gold spotting and brown eyes). Barnabas was the largest, and he was always eager to throw his weight around and attempt to bully Peter while Genevieve egged him on. However, Ruby would not allow it, and the two would often engage in heated brawls, until their parents came and separated them.
Katrina (grey and white with yellow eyes) was Ruby’s youngest sister. The two never had much conflict between them, but most of their interactions were brief and rather tense. But one afternoon, for one reason or another, Katrina was being especially hostile towards Ruby, who had done nothing wrong. Ruby did her best to dismiss Katrina’s hostile advances, but eventually it became too much to bear, and she lashed out at Katrina. Ruby took a firm hold of her sister’s right forepaw, and the grey pup made the mistake of trying to roll away. Ruby’s vice-like grip did not give way, which resulted in a twisted, mangled paw.
Ruby’s second encounter with Saxon occurred hours after the incident. Ruby expected to be reprimanded, but instead the alpha complimented her victory, and began to vaguely explain how the pack functioned. “Seek out the weak links,” Saxon explained, “and annihilate them. The world is a place for the strong. The feeble have no place in our domain.” Saxon then said more would be explained when Ruby was older, and dismissed her from his den.

{Twenty-one Weeks}Ruby had been travelling with the pack on hunting sessions for a few weeks by this point. It was at this point that Ruby and Peter had begun growing distant. Ruby was much more interested in taking down the prey, while Peter found joy in the chase. Oddly enough, Ruby ended up becoming partners with Barnabas, while Peter was partnered with Genevieve. Katrina, unable to participate due to her maimed limb, was left at the den and did not receive training.
Several days later Ruby and Peter were wrestling outside the den. Their parents, Bjorn and Lorelai, had been summoned by Saxon. The pups were enjoying their time together, until a bloodcurdling cry sounded from within Saxon’s den. The alpha emerged from his quarters, Lorelai hot on his heels and Bjorn shortly after. Ruby’s mother was frantically screaming at the massive alpha, and when he graced her with no response, she began biting at his flank. Then, with a single heavy blow, Saxon knocked Lorelai to the ground. He strode past Ruby and Peter, a ghastly grin on his muzzle. Ruby’s eyes met the alphas for only a moment, but it was enough to send a shiver down her spine.
Saxon vanished for a moment, then returned with a frantic Katrina struggling in his jaws. Ruby recalled the words he had spoken a few weeks prior, and her amber eyes instantly snapped towards her sisters’ mangled paw. Ruby understood what was happening. She had unknowingly sentenced her sister to death.
Saxon did not call out to summon the pack, but already many had gathered around. Lorelai was hysterical; crying, screaming, pleading, and trying to claw her way towards Saxon, but Bjorn held her back. The alpha dropped Katrina at his paws, and uttered the words “The feeble have no place in our domain.” Before reaching down and savagely snapping the pup’s neck.
The sound of Lorelai’s cries still echo in Ruby’s mind.

(Adolescent)
{1.5 Years}Time passed, but scars remained. Ruby’s mother never recovered from Katrina’s death, and her health began rapidly deteriorating. The words were never spoken, but Ruby knew Lorelai blamed her for the death of her sister. She could see it in her mother’s eyes every time she gazed into them. However, the guilt never truly settled in Ruby’s heart.
As Ruby grew, Saxon’s influence on her also spread. He took her under his wing and became a mentor to her, teaching her the ways of the pack. “Your sister was a liability.” The alpha once said, “She could not hunt, she could not fight. We did not need the extra mouth to feed- she was unable to contribute to the pack’s welfare, therefor did not deserve a place among our ranks.” Ruby sat and listened intently to every word, and every lecture given by Saxon. She didn’t know any better- for all she knew, this was how all packs functioned. In time, Saxon began teaching Ruby the art of combat. The two would enter the forests each day at dawn and spar. Saxon taught Ruby everything she knows about fighting.

{2 Years}Ruby’s maturity came later than her siblings. When she experienced her first heat she truly had no idea what to do with herself, that being said, she spent much of that time away from the pack, mostly traveling in the more mountainous areas climbing the steep rocks and singing to herself. Aside from the discomfort in her gut, she found much enjoyment in her solitary escapades.
One day, however, as Ruby left just before dawn, she was unaware that she was being followed. The she-wolf began her hike, scaling stone after stone, pulling herself up the steep mountain face and singing softly to herself.
“You took it with you when you left; these scars are just a trace. Now it wanders lost and wounded, this heart that I misplaced…”
“Lovely singing.” Came a voice from behind, way too close for comfort. At this, Ruby instantly went on the offensive. She kicked out her hind legs, connecting with a solid mass and knocking the pursuant back. She then spun around and dashed towards the foe, but the uneven surface of the mountain tripped her up, and she was unable to prevent herself from toppling over and falling onto the hard, rocky surface. Momentarily dazed, she acknowledged a dark shadow looming over her, and attempted to snap at it, but was swiftly pinned down by massive paws.
“Interesting tactics with the rear kick, but it appears you need to work on your balance. You could have had an advantage over me if you had not tripped.” A gruff voice reverberated in her ears as the pressure on her body was slightly lifted. Ah, Saxon.
Ruby released a firm snort and wriggled out of his loosened grip. She sent a perplexed look in his direction, before turning tail and sprinting back up the hill. She had a vague idea of why he followed her, and truly had no interest in his attempts at courting her. Unfortunately the initial rejected wasn’t enough to keep the damn blighter at bay, as a set of heavy paw steps clambering up the mountain face could be heard closely behind her.
Ruby knew climbing was not a strong point of the alpha, and would have had no trouble outrunning him should she need to- but her primal instincts did not allow it. Instead the duo seemed to dance around each other, with Ruby always remaining one step ahead. If Saxon flanked her on the right, she would leap ahead and dash to the left. Eventually, though, the mountain’s heights were reached, and there was no longer ample space for Ruby to evade her persistent alpha. However, at this point she didn’t mind anymore. Ruby, with Saxon hot on her heels, looked back at the massive black wolf and, with a look of defiance in her amber eyes, promptly smacked him across the muzzle with her tail before strutting off and sitting at beside the mountain’s cliff. Out of everything there was to see, Ruby most distinctly remembered the vast ocean sparkling in the early sunlight. It truly was her favorite part of the territory, aside from the mountains. In fact, she was so mesmerized by the dazzling ocean that she had not noticed Saxon take a seat beside her. Ruby only became aware of his presence when she felt a nibble behind her left ear, which she hastily flicked in his face out of exasperation.
What happened next was a series of cat-and-mouse antics. Ruby moving away and giving Saxon the cold shoulder, while he continued pursuing and attempting to court her. Eventually, Ruby’s instincts overpowered her wills, and she surrendered herself to the alpha.
The rest of the day was lost in history.

The rest of the day was lost in history.
{2.2 Years}Ruby’s pregnancy was not an easy one. Throughout her gestation period she was often ill, and under constant stress. Neighboring packs, for the first time in a few years, had begun making organizing assaults on her pack’s territory. Despite her condition Ruby chose to fight alongside her pack, much to the disapproval of her mother. Saxon was more than happy to have all available paws on the battlefield, and lead his pack into battle with merciless fury. Ruby’s thoughts were not on her precious cargo, instead it was on victory. She cut down enemy forces left and right, none who faced her walked away without sustaining lethal injuries.
Ruby, in truth, would have been more careful during this time if she had not been so ill. When in combat, her mind was distracted. She was in a savage state of mind, not focusing on anything except tearing into her opponents. But when she was in their camp resting, she felt terrible- nauseous, cramped, achy, and just entirely unpleasant. But perhaps she should have listened to her mother, as right before the pack was preparing to set out for war, Ruby went into labor, and it was the most difficult thing Ruby had ever endured. When it was over, after hours of agony and struggling, there was nothing to show for her efforts. Six pups were brought into the world that day, and none of them were alive to experience it.
Ruby was heartbroken.

(Young Adult)
{3 Years}Months passed, and the onslaught of war had not subsided. Ruby did not recover from the incident, and acted with brutal hostility towards all the males in her pack, including her own brothers, and especially towards Saxon. Her only solace was the war. She unleashed her fury onto rival packs, relentless and unyielding. The entirety of the war was an endless massacre, no place was free of bloodshed. The forests were caked in crimson, the mountains splattered, and the ocean ran red with the blood of many. An ever-present metallic odor hung in the air but the aroma was welcomed by Ruby, she grew accustomed to it. She had to, as she would emerge from every battle painted red with the blood of her enemies.
After each battle, Ruby’s mental state deteriorated. Peter had been slaughtered by a rival pack’s alpha, Lorelai and Bjorn met their ends on the mountains Ruby used to love climbing. Genevieve was drowned in the crimson tides, and Saxon had been mortally wounded after three enemy wolves cornered him. As for Barnabas, he, like a coward, abandoned his pack and joined up with the rebels. Ruby resented the blighter when he still resided with her pack, but after he fled, any sibling bond they had was broken. He was just another inevitable casualty.
Ruby and her savage tactics did not go unnoticed by the packs, especially her own. Eventually all who entered the battlefield took to calling her “Ruby the Red”, as a tribute to her brutal maulings.

{3.5 Years}So much blood had been shed, and so many had been lost to the war. But still no side would budge, neither would surrender, and a truce was out of the question. The numbers in Ruby’s pack dwindled, and by this point Saxon had succumbed to his injuries and died from an infection. The pack looked to Ruby for guidance, but with her mind clouded with anger and grief, she was hardly a reliable leader.
As Ruby’s pack waited on the ocean shore, haggard, bruised and battered from the long months of war. Their numbers dwindled, and their former glory in numbers was a distant memory. They were outnumbered, and anyone with a brain to spare would have fled. In fact, many did. Ruby didn’t try to stop them; she planned on abandoning this wasteland soon, too. But there was one more loose end to tie, and it would be tied on this day, or she would surrender to death.
Furious winds howled against her perked ears, and a barrage of massive raindrops assaulted her tousled, matted fur. Ruby’s eyes were alert and focused, staring intently at the darkened forest. Time seemed to move slowly, and judging by the way the bushes and underbrush bobbed about, she concluded that her opponents moving at a rapid pace. Ruby heard the voices of the wolves around her. They were yelling frantically, and Ruby was sure it was due to spouts of anger and fear as they shouted to be heard over the violent winds. The mayhem occurring around her only put Ruby further on edge. There were no familiar scents to help her keep a level-head, and she began growling as the distant sound of paw-steps grew closer. Ruby knew exactly what was happening, and she knew that once the enemy emerged from the underbrush, all Hell would break loose.
She felt the vibrations in the ground; the thunderous echo of paw-steps running across the muddy terrain rang in her head. Ruby blinked, and when her eyes reopened, a wave of snarling foes burst out of the thicket. Ruby’s eyes instantly fell upon her quarry; Barnabas, the damn traitor. Ruby bared her fangs and charged forward, evading the attacks of any who attempted to obscure her path, and launched herself at Barnabas. The two engaged in a heated confrontation, with Barnabas coughing out excuses for his actions. Ruby paid no attention, and continuously snapped at his face and throat. Ruby was deaf to all surrounding sounds as blood roared in her ears. It took no time for her to gain the upper paw, and she tore her brother open from groin to throat. Time seemed to stand still as his body plummeted to the ground, and upon hearing the wet slap of his body hitting the muddy grounds, followed by the terrible crash and bang of thunder, Ruby, cloaked in the blood of her kin, stood like a statue.
She loomed over his corpse, the metallic scent of blood stinging her nose. Despite her victory, Ruby still felt defeated. Her family, her friends, all whom she cared for had met their demise. She used to relish in the scent of battle, and adore the taste of her enemies’ blood. But now, the odor brought a sickening feeling in her stomach, and the taste of blood burned her tongue. There was nothing left for her here; she had no reason to stay. On this day, victory would go to her enemies, and the Pack of the Blooded Sea would cease to exist. As Ruby turned from Barnabas’ cooling corpse and fled from the beach, she could hear the triumphant cries from the victors.
“Ruby the Red has fled! The Blooded Sea has fallen! The tyranny has ended!”
And thus continues the story of Ruby the Red, a wolf numbed by trauma who wanders in search of her purpose. Will you become a part of her history?
