Hello so, I decited to make this one haha. This is infromation and stuff, so I thought this may go here on off topic?
I found moose remainings in the forest. It was natural death due to old age, illness or damage. I do not believe that the moose was killed. Here are no large predators where I live. In my country, yes, but not in my living area.
So yeah, this moose was female, and I have to say she was about 16-20 years or age. She probably stood around 180 cm - 2m high and totally weighted over 400 kg. How I know? I only guess by age (can see on: size of skull and how the teeth looked like) and gender. I can't say it's certain and I may be little bit wrong at some things. Anyway, we are talking about huge moose lady.

I was walking in an forest area where I have never been before, and it seemed like no humans had been in the area in months or years. The moose was laying in sheltery place between small trees, where were no visiblity more than 3 meters away from the carcass. Or it was already just pile of bones. I have to say that it totally gave me quite a scare. I just don't walk into someones gigantic bones that often!
I found the skull and jawbones on top of other skeleton parts. It's huge leg bones were found in meter or two away from the boggest pile of bones. There were poop and traces of small predators like foxes and raccoon dogs (not raccoon, a raccoon dog is wild dog species in nothern europe), and bagders. So definetly the moose was found by hungry mouths after it's death.
I figured that I will take the skull, since I collect bones. I already have: fox jawbone, raccoon dog skull, white tailed deer bucks skull, bird skull, hare skull, white tailed deer does jaws and now a moose skull. I knew that I shall not call home and ask permission. They can't say no after the skull is already home, but they can still say no when it's still out there. I can carry bones and skulls home if they don't have rotten meat in them, and I never touch heads wich have alot of rotten meat in them.
I may need to put here a warning: even if I collect bones, I have already done it for long and I have read about it before even starting. I know the risks and what all there can be in carcasses. Some countries may have viruses and bacteria wich are deadly to humans and animals, and if you colllect dead animal with that virus, you may get it. So be careful! Act responsibly and always remember to wear rubber gloves!
How I clean skulls? I warm up water to boiling ( 100 C ) and pour it over the skull. Best way would be putting the skull in saucepan and boil it there for at least 1h. I can't do that, but I recommend it. Anyway, I just pour the boiling water everywhere in the head, I repeat it several times. Then I take warm or hot water and brush or anything; depends how much meat there is, and pour soap over the skull. I brush and clean and continue until it's clean. I use gloves and tear off all the meat there may be and wash those parts super carefully!
Then I take highly disinfecting stuff and pour it over the skull and let it be and take affect. I'm always careful with higly disinfecting subtances, since they can; corrode, be dangerous when breathed etc...So very carefully and still wear gloves. After that, I'm ready. This whole process can take up to 3 hours or more. Depending how fresh/old the skull is. This time it was quite fast, since the skull was months old already.
But yeah, that's how I do it, and I only did this thread to take out this subject; now, I'd want to know if there are any other ppl who collect bones? And what bones you have? How you clean them and how you found/got them? I just wanna know other ppls experiences with this xD
Also, feel free to ask anything you have in your mind about this from me or just comment even if you don't have any skulls!
